Editing

The trim tools, what each one actually does to the clips around it, and the edits that do not need a tool at all.

Three-point editing

Mark I and O in the Source monitor, put the playhead where you want the clip to land, then:

KeyEditWhat happens to the rest
.OverwriteWhatever was under it is replaced. Nothing moves.
,InsertLater clips are pushed right by the clip’s length.

Insert ripples every unlocked track, which keeps sync by default. Per-track sync locks arrive with the next phase.

The tools

KeyToolWhat it does
VSelectionMove clips; drag an edge to trim it, leaving a gap or overwriting.
ATrack Select ForwardSelects this clip and everything after it. Shift extends to every track.
Shift+ATrack Select BackwardThe same, backwards.
BRipple TrimTrims an edge and closes or opens the timeline behind it.
NRolling EditMoves the cut between two clips. Total length is unchanged.
YSlipChanges which part of the source is used. Position and length unchanged.
USlideMoves a clip between its neighbours, retrimming them. Needs a clip on both sides.
RRate StretchDrag an edge to change the clip’s speed, keeping its source range.
CRazorClick a clip to split it at that point.

Edits that need no tool

KeyAction
Cmd/Ctrl + KSplit the selection, or whatever is under the playhead
QRipple trim the head back to the playhead
WRipple trim the tail forward to the playhead
DeleteLift — remove the clip and leave a gap
Shift + DeleteRipple delete — remove it and close the gap
Alt + / Nudge the selection one frame (add Shift for five)
Shift + EEnable or disable a clip without removing it
MAdd a marker at the playhead

Snapping

Snap in the timeline toolbar pulls clip drags to edit points, markers and the playhead. Turn it off when you need a position that is deliberately just off a cut.

Scrubbing

Dragging the playhead plays audio as you go. Scrub audio is decoded separately from playback, so it stays available even when a clip is still loading — if you can hear a scrub but not a play, that difference is a real signal and worth reporting.

Not built yet, deliberately: J reverse playback reports itself as unsupported rather than pretending; waveforms and clip thumbnails on the timeline are coming; and the timeline is not virtualised, so very long sequences will slow down before they break.
