A practice built from pattern
Jessica Suzanne Interiors is a Chicago studio for homes, lounges, bars and the rooms where people work. Founded in 2014. Four people. One way of working.

What we are actually doing
Most of design is deciding what a room is for. We spend the first weeks of a project on that, at your table, before a single sample arrives. Then the plan, which is where most of the money is saved. Then the material that will carry the room: usually the floor, sometimes a wall, once a ceiling. Everything else is chosen to agree with it.
The practice’s identity is drawn the same way. A square, a circle and a triangle, each filled with a diagonal weave that reads as parquet, as herringbone, as textile, depending on where it lands. It is the thing the work is made of.

Four things we believe
- 01
Use first
How you eat breakfast matters more than what colour you like. We ask about the first before the second.
- 02
Pattern as structure
Floors, textiles and joinery carry the room. Decoration is what is left when the structure is right.
- 03
Fewer, better
A handful of projects a year, each with the same four people from the first sketch to the last cushion.
- 04
Nothing precious
Sofas take dogs. Tables take homework. A room that cannot be lived in has not been designed yet.
“A room is finished when you stop noticing it and start living in it.”The studio
The principals
Small on purpose. One of the three leads your project, from the first visit to the day the rugs are rolled out.
