A nineteenth-century row house restored to its plasterwork, and given a quieter, softer life inside it.

The house kept its best things: deep cornices, a marble mantel in nearly every room and three tall windows in each bay. We restored them, laid herringbone oak through the main floor, and painted everything the same warm white so the mouldings show by shadow rather than colour.

Against the old architecture the furniture is plainly new: rounded bouclé seating, a travertine table long enough for ten, a stone island with four chairs at the kitchen window. Brass is kept to the lights and the taps.

The study is the one dark room, with ebonised shelving lit from within. The stair hall is left almost empty: a stone console, a runner and the original black newel post.
